The SPA Lab is excited for another year of social justice research. Along with returning seniors, Nicole Borowiec, Kate Evangeline, Patrick Kelly, and Rosie Morford, the lab has new juniors Schuyler Coughlin and Katie Labovitz, as well as seniors Ashley Barron and Sidney Skop joining it. Ashley will be conducting an independent study examining the effects of inclusive marketing strategies on College support among majority and minority students.

Dr. Mendoza will be teaching his PSY 470: Stereotypes & Prejudice seminar this fall semester. The course has been designated as a flagship course for a recently funded grant that promotes civil discourse and encourages conversations for change. Congratulations to Patrick, who was granted a Summer Undergraduate Research Award to work with Dr. Mendoza. His project will examine the effects of flag priming on shooter bias. To learn more about the aim of this research, click here.

Dr. Mendoza presented the research he conducted with Sam and Kate at the Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues Conference in San Juan, PR.  The poster was titled, "Activating Bias Against Minorities Through Racialized COVID-19 Language" and has important implications for the way we speak about the pandemic to others.

The SPA Lab hosted Dr. Laurie Kaufman's students from the Middlebridge School, who were visiting from Narragansett, RI to learn first hand about psychological research. These kids were fully engaged and asked brilliant questions, which the lab members handled with expertise.

Dr. Mendoza facilitated a Wisdom Over Waffles workshop with Erin Corry on "Bias, Microaggressions, and Allyship" for the PC Athletic Department. He also co-hosted a FacultTEAS session with graduate student Janaja Santos on "The Pandemic Minority Experience."

Congratulations to Tiffany and Hope, who presented their poster, "A Holistic Approach to Combating Stereotype Threat in STEM Among Elementary Children" at the Eastern Psychological Association Conference in NYC. Their research generated a lot of interest especially with the interactive QR code that allowed attendees to download their STEM toolkit.

After a COVID-related pause in 2020, the annual SPA Lab Christmas Cookie Decorating Party resumed this year at Dr. Mendoza's house. The students went all out with extra festive outfits and amazing cookies. Vivi and Mason were once again the judges and naturally voted themselves the winners.

Dr. Mendoza was invited to serve as a presenter and panelist for two important campus events. The first event, "Everyone Matters: A Conversation about the Mental Health of Underrepresented Groups of People" was co-sponsored by the Board of Multicultural Student Association and Active Minds and included Dr. Smaranda Lawrie from the Department of Psychology and Erin Corry from the Office of IDEI. The second event, "Discussing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion"  was sponsored by the Board of Programmers and included Dr. Abby Corrington from the PC Business School. Both were well attended and provided a safe space for students to express their past challenges, current frustrations, and future aspirations.

The SPA Lab is excited to be meeting in person again this fall semester with its newest members, juniors Nicole Borowiec, Kate Evangeline, Patrick Kelly and Rosie Morford. Congratulations to lab members Tiffany Berry and Hope Tiboni for receiving the Clint Anderson Research in Psychological Science Award! They will be working this summer with Dr. Mendoza to investigate STEM related programs in the city of Providence for elementary-aged children. Their goal is to conduct a literature review on the obstacles young students, especially girls, face in STEM and to ultimately develop an evidence-based toolkit that can be used by teachers to inspire and foster these interests. Congratulations to our senior lab members who have committed to graduate programs for next year! Alex will be attending the PsyD in Clinical Psychology Program at Nova Southeastern University in Florida. Katherine will be continuing her studies at Providence College in their Master of Education in Literacy Program. Michael will be earning his MS in Counseling Psychology at Northeastern University in Boston. Finally, Taylor will be earning her Juris Doctor degree from the Catholic University of America in Washington, D. C. The lab celebrated everyone's accomplishments with an end-of-the-year party at Dr. Mendoza's house.

We are excited to have two new lab members this semester! Taylor Tristine (PC '21) and Patrick Kelly (PC '23) have joined our team and look forward to conducting research on intergroup bias. This spring, Sam M. will also be conducting an independent study examining how gender bias operates in the music industry.

Dr. Mendoza kicked off the inaugural PC Anti-Racism Summer Series with a live Zoom lecture on the psychology of implicit bias. The 30min presentation was attended by over 200 people who got a chance to submit questions for a moderated Q&A portion that followed. May 2020

Dr. Mendoza has been selected as a Riccobono Academic Resilience Faculty Fellow. This mini-grant program is designed to support efforts to promote student well-being throughout course curriculum and activities. Dr. Mendoza's application focused on his I/O Psychology course this coming fall, which covers the impact of discrimination, stress, and emotional contagion in the workplace. Congratulations to Alex, who has been awarded a Summer Undergraduate Research Award! Her application was only one of four to receive the distinction of Veritas, marking its superb quality and potential impact. Due to COVID-19, the College has decided to cancel all in-person classes and will strictly meet online for the rest of the semester. Everyone in the SPA Lab is saddened by this news but will continue to hold Zoom meetings to move forward with its research projects!

The SPA Lab took some time to unwind with its first ever bowling night! No one was particularly good, but Katherine and Michael were exceptionally bad, despite the threat of more Twitter data coding. Personalized jackets and bowling balls may be forthcoming for this group.

Alison will be combining her marketing and psychology backgrounds with her interest in sports to conduct an independent study this semester. Her research will specifically examine how individuation strategies can be used to reduce gender bias against women's collegiate athletics. We also bid adieu to Sam, who will be studying abroad in Barcelona. Best of luck on your adventures in Spain!

The SPA Lab has a new home within the state-of-the-art Caiafa Center for the Psychological Sciences! The space was made possible, in part, by the generous donation of Leo Caiafa, Jr., the great uncle of lab alum Julianne Szemko. The research suite includes a subject waiting area, a group interaction room outfitted with cameras, and a room with three private computer cubicles. Additionally, there is an attached classroom that can accommodate advanced seminar courses. We are incredibly excited about all the research and learning opportunities these rooms will provide.

The SPA Lab welcomes its newest members, juniors Alex Baker, Katherine Mandarakas, Samantha Matzerath, and Michael Pettinato! They are looking forward to getting started on research projects this year that pertain to stereotyping, allyship, inequality, and social justice issues. They are also keeping their fingers crossed for some conference travel experiences!

Dr. Mendoza will be sharing his expertise with the Office of Institutional Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion with a new faculty-in-residence position at Providence College. The overarching aim of this appointment is to advance the strategic direction of the office and help it sustain its mission through comprehensive programming and assessment recommendations. As part of this work, Dr. Mendoza talked about inclusive teaching practices to the new faculty during their summer orientation.

Dr. Mendoza traveled to San Diego, CA to attend a pre-conference on Diversity and Inclusion and present the lab's research at SPSSI. The theme for the conference this year was "Fighting Injustice" and our poster on the impact of body cameras on shooter bias was well received!
